Public Policy
The Down Syndrome Indiana Governmental Affairs Committee is a collaborative partnership with the National Down Syndrome Society. Working together with Down syndrome family support and advocacy organizations from across Indiana, we strive to improve the lives of all people impacted by Down syndrome through a grassroots network of self-advocates, families and professionals. Our efforts seek to build private and public partnerships to create positive changes in public policy.
Mission
To harness the untapped power of thousands of families, friends, and individuals with Down syndrome throughout the State of Indiana. To protect our children’s education rights and improve education by influencing public policy. To influence policies that will create employment and opportunities for independent and/or community living. To help create postsecondary educational opportunities in Indiana. To foster the positive image of Down syndrome and highlight the abilities of persons with Down syndrome.
Policy Priorities
Coordinate the efforts of all Indiana Down syndrome family support and advocacy groups. Build a politically effective grass roots network that speaks with a single voice. Work with the Indiana Legislature on high priority policies and build relationships with state legislators. Work with the National Down Syndrome Society National Policy Center to advocate at both the state and national level. Work collaboratively with the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, the Arc of Indiana and other groups serving individuals with disabilities. Train parents and individuals with Down syndrome to be more effective with their political voice. Ensure our place at the policy making table. Positively influence how the State of Indiana implements IDEA and prevent harmful changes to Indiana’s education policy. Prevent being overlooked in the debate over Medicaid, Social Security reforms and Healthcare reform.
Governmental Affairs Committee
The Down Syndrome Indiana Governmental Affairs Committee needs the support of everyone in Indiana to make positive change in public policy for individuals with disabilities. In 2010 the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) will come up for reauthorization by Congress.
